In a recent appearance on CNN, extremism expert Donie O’Sullivan addressed the issue of political extremism in the United States. O'Sullivan claimed that current extremism is primarily on the right, with no equivalent activity on the left. This discussion took place as O'Sullivan previewed his upcoming report for Sunday's segment on The Whole Story, which will delve into political extremism.
O’Sullivan stated, "when it comes to extremism in this country, I mean, the issue very much so is on the right, on the far-right from — you know, from Charlottesville to — to January 6. There isn’t exactly an equivalent on the left in this moment."
Co-host Jessica Dean noted that O’Sullivan’s special would also cover supporters of Luigi Mangione, who stands accused of murdering United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson. However, O'Sullivan did not specifically comment on the left's reactions to Mangione.
The segment sparked reactions, as some highlighted violent actions attributed to the political left, questioning whether they constitute extremism. These incidents include attacks on Tesla dealerships and anti-Semitic demonstrations on college campuses.
Critics challenged CNN's portrayal, suggesting it reflects a distorted view of political extremism in America, yet O’Sullivan maintained his stance on the matter, underscoring his perspective of right-wing dominance in instances of extremism.
