CNN's data analyst Harry Enten recently shared surprising findings regarding a shift in American political dynamics. According to Enten, the Republican Party is emerging as the party that appeals more to the working class, historically a stronghold for Democrats.
This change became noticeable during the 2024 elections when former President Donald Trump gained significant support from average Americans across various demographics. Enten cited this development on Friday on "CNN News Central," highlighting "new aggregate poll numbers" that indicate Republicans and Democrats are now seen equally as caring for U.S. citizens. Typically, this perception has favored Democrats in the past.
"This, to me, is one of the most shocking pieces of poll data that I truly, truthfully have seen this year, or maybe in any prior year," Enten remarked. He emphasized the unexpected nature of these findings in the context of Trump's tariffs unveiled earlier this month. He added, "I want you to take a look at prior years - Democrats always lead on this question."
Enten expressed further surprise, noting a significant shift: "All of a sudden, a tie? All of a sudden, the Democrats, who were the party of the people. No more! No more! We get a tie on this question, on a question that has traditionally overwhelmingly been a Democratic advantage… It’s truly something I would not have expected to see, especially after this tariff war had begun."
Enten's analysis suggests that the notable gains for Republicans among the working class have altered traditional political alignments.
The changing perceptions prompt questions about the Democrats' current strategy, as some view them as increasingly disconnected from working-class concerns.
