House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated this week that prices are rising under President Donald Trump's leadership. This message aligns with a recent pattern among Democrats, who have been repeating this sentiment since Trump's inauguration.
However, there is a contradiction in Jeffries' claim as inflation has shown a notable decrease. Recent reports indicate a significant drop in inflation, shedding light on the current economic landscape. According to CNBC, "Inflation rate eases to 2.4% in March, lower than expected; core at 4-year low." The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the consumer price index, representing the cost of goods and services in the U.S., fell by a seasonally adjusted 0.1% in March. This decline brought the 12-month inflation rate to 2.4%, down from 2.8% in February. Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, increased by 0.1% that month, marking a 2.8% annual rate, the lowest since March 2021. Wall Street had anticipated headline inflation of 2.6% and core inflation at 3%.
Even CNN noted this positive development, stating, "Consumer prices month-over-month, so this was actually a DROP of .1% — that's the first time we've seen that since COVID. Year-over-year, the annual inflation rate was at 2.4%. This was also BETTER THAN EXPECTED and a 6-month low, moving in the right direction."
The recent economic trends are challenging established narratives, as the economy continues to show signs of recovery.
