A French politician has called for the return of the Statue of Liberty, arguing that the United States no longer embodies the values it once represented. Raphaël Glucksmann, a member of the European Parliament and part of the Place Publique movement, criticized U.S. policies under President Donald Trump during a recent gathering.
Glucksmann expressed his dissatisfaction with Trump's foreign policy and decisions related to scientific freedom and budget allocations. He stated, “We’re going to say to the Americans who have chosen to side with tyrants, to the Americans who fired researchers for demonstrating scientific freedom, ‘Give us back the Statue of Liberty. We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently you despise it. So it will be just fine here at home.’”
He further commented on America's dismissal of researchers advocating for scientific freedom and extended an invitation for these scientists to come to France. “The second thing we’re going to say to the Americans is ‘if you want to fire your best researchers, if you want to fire all the people who, through their freedom and their sense of innovation, their taste for doubt and research, have made your country the world’s leading power, then we’re going to welcome them,’” Glucksmann added.
Additionally, Glucksmann criticized right-wing French parliamentarians who support Trump and Elon Musk, referring to them as a “fan club.”
The Statue of Liberty was designed by French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi and gifted by France in 1886. It was intended as a symbol commemorating both nations' enduring friendship and celebrating the centennial of American independence.
