Dr. Susan Stoddard, the principal of Lakeside High School, has been named DeKalb County School District’s Principal of the Year for 2024-2025. Her journey from a challenging childhood to this prestigious recognition is marked by her dedication to education and community service.
Reflecting on her early years, Dr. Stoddard said, “They helped set a course for my life that simply would never have been possible.” She attributes her success to the mentorship she received from teachers and coaches during her school days, which instilled in her a lifelong commitment to giving back.
The award was presented at the District’s 11th Annual Academy of Educational Excellence Awards Gala last November. For Dr. Stoddard, it represents more than just an accolade; it acknowledges her enduring legacy of service. “This has been a potent reminder to really pause and look back at all that we’ve accomplished together,” she stated.
Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, Dr. Stoddard pursued higher education with a basketball scholarship at the University of Florida, earning degrees in special education and later completing her doctorate in educational leadership at the University of Southern Mississippi. With 35 years in education, she has led Lakeside High School since 2020.
“Serving in DeKalb has underscored what a difference it makes to work in a system where I am free to bring all of who I am to the job,” said Dr. Stoddard. She appreciates DeKalb’s commitment to supporting growth among employees and students alike.
Students at Lakeside praise Dr. Stoddard's efforts in fostering an inclusive environment. Elliot Steiner, a 10th-grade student, remarked on her ability to ensure comfort and satisfaction for all students: “The overall quality of Lakeside High School has only improved under her watch.”
In celebration of her achievement as Principal of the Year, Lakeside organized a hallway parade featuring the school's marching band. Students and staff gathered to honor Dr. Stoddard and other distinguished school employees.
Dr. Stoddard emphasized teamwork as key to their success: “We have a saying at Lakeside: ‘No Viking Walks Alone.’ It is a motto I see in action every day.”
Her story underscores the impact of character and support throughout one's journey, illustrating how these elements can lead from personal challenges to professional triumphs within educational leadership.
