The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) has reaffirmed its commitment to student safety and success amid recent federal actions concerning immigration. Superintendent Dr. Devon Q. Horton addressed DCSD families in a letter, emphasizing the district's dedication to upholding every child's right to public education while complying with legal requirements and protecting student privacy.
Dr. Horton stated that a team of district leaders has been directed to regularly monitor changes at the federal level and review guidance on immigration issues from authorities as it becomes available. This team will also work on compiling resources and gathering information to support schools and families within the district.
Staff members have been instructed to direct any visiting immigration authorities immediately to a school administrator, who will then contact the DCSD Police Department and document the visit. Access beyond the primary office or access to students or their information is prohibited without a court order or exigent circumstances.
Dr. Horton concluded by expressing DCSD's commitment "to ensuring that our schools remain a safe and welcoming environment for all students."
