Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, who previously expressed her intent to resist former President Donald Trump's deportation plans for illegal immigrants, has now stated her support for the apprehension of criminals by federal immigration agents. In November, Healey had committed to using her executive power to "protect" residents of Massachusetts, including those without legal status.
However, recent operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Boston have prompted a shift in her stance. The ICE operation targeted individuals with serious criminal backgrounds, resulting in several arrests. Bill Melugin reported witnessing eight arrests involving suspects linked to MS-13, Interpol Red Notices, and various violent crimes.
Governor Healey addressed these developments by stating, "I support the apprehension of criminals." She clarified that she does not consider the actions as "raids," but rather as necessary measures for community safety. Healey emphasized her support for arresting criminals irrespective of their immigration status.
Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell continues to challenge the Trump administration's immigration policies. Despite initial opposition rhetoric from Healey, the reality of ICE operations appears to have influenced her position on the matter.
