Wikipedia's allocation of funds towards Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives has sparked criticism from some public figures. Notably, Elon Musk has voiced opposition to these expenditures, urging his followers not to contribute financially to the organization.
A report by The New York Post highlights that Wikipedia spent over $50 million on DEI efforts. Musk, who has a significant following on social media platform X, expressed his disapproval through multiple posts. He stated: "Stop donating to Wokepedia until they restore balance to their editing authority."
The controversy stems from a pie chart shared by "Libs of TikTok," indicating that 29% of Wikipedia’s budget for 2023-24 was allocated for equity and safety & inclusion measures. Specifically, the Wikimedia Foundation planned to spend $51.7 million in its budget: $31.2 million on equity and $20.5 million on safety and inclusion. Infrastructure received the largest portion with $86.1 million, while effectiveness accounted for $39.2 million.
Musk's remarks align with ongoing criticisms about perceived bias within Wikipedia's content and financial decisions related to DEI policies.
