WASHINGTON, D.C. – In the aftermath of yet another ProPublica report showing billionaire megadonor – this time hedge fund owner Paul Singer – showering Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito with luxury travel that the justice did not disclose – Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04), the Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet, issued the following statement:
“American democracy is undermined by what has now become a constant flow of revelations documenting the failures and refusals of Supreme Court justices to hold themselves to the same standards of ethical conduct that all lower court judges must follow. These reports about undisclosed, all-expense paid luxury vacations taken by Justices Scalia, Thomas and Alito undermine public trust and confidence in the rule of law upon which our democracy is predicated. Congress must take immediate action to protect our democracy by passing the Judiciary Act of 2023 that would expand the Supreme Court, which has been captured by dark-money corporate elites led by Leonard Leo and the Federalist Society. Congress should also act to pass my and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse’s SCERT Act – H.R.926 – Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act of 2023.”
