Job Description
POSITION: Membership Director
TYPE: Permanent, Full-Time
REPORTS TO: President & CEO
LOCATION: This position is a hybrid position that works both in the office and at home. This position requires travel in and around DeKalb County, Georgia.
POSITION SUMMARY: The Membership Director is responsible for developing the membership at the DeKalb Chamber through membership retention, new member recruitment, and overseeing the membership pipeline. The Membership Director is also responsible for networking events, ribbon cuttings, and the Leads Group. This position will work with other Chamber staff on program development and marketing strategies as it pertains to the membership.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: The Membership Director is responsible for the following essential functions:
Membership Retention:
- Develops, coordinates, and maintains a comprehensive member relations, service and retention program and explores, researches, and implements best retention practices within the Chamber industry.
- Work with staff to help identify and develop programs, services, and benefits that will create additional value for current and prospective members.
- Work with staff to ensure the Annual Member Contact Timeline is adhered to, including conducting annual goodwill calls.
- Contacts on a timely basis, and works with, current members whose accounts are past due or who have indicated they do not wish to renew their membership, with an emphasis on encouraging renewal.
- Provide informative guidance on benefits to members by frequently and effectively communicating opportunities to existing members.
- Schedule and coordinate ribbon cuttings and groundbreakings for new and existing members.
- Coordinates regularly scheduled retention calls and visits.
- Schedules, coordinates, and presents the Chamber 101 Membership Orientation to ensure new members understand the Chamber mission and services.
- Ensures new membership packets, certificates, and decals are distributed.
- Consulting with other Chamber colleagues and state and national Chamber organizations, continuously seeks new and improved approaches for enhancing the Chamber’s membership retention effort.
- Pro-actively initiates contact with prospective member businesses.
- Promptly and effectively responds to businesses and other employers inquiring about membership in the Chamber.
- Actively seeks membership prospects and develops and maintains a comprehensive and accurate database of prospective members.
- Working with other Chamber colleagues and state and national Chamber organizations, continuously seeks new and improved approaches for enhancing the Chamber’s membership recruitment effort.
- Oversee and coordinate Chamber membership and networking programs, such as Business After Hours/networking events, Chairman’s Circle events, Day of Service, Leads Group, and Chamber 101 classes.
- Secures sponsorships for assigned programs, events, and membership activities.
- Works to secure Ambassadors to assist as greeters and in other capacities at Chamber events.
- Assists in reviewing new and existing affinity programs to ensure that they are providing value to the Chamber’s members, thus leading to increased satisfaction and retention.
- Assist with planning and staffing as needed at other Chamber events.
- Maintain database updates with updated member information, including conducting annual member information verification calls/emails.
- Working with the Director of Operations, ensures the timely preparation and accuracy of the monthly Membership Report and Aging Report for presentation and review by the President & CEO, Executive Committee, and Board of Directors.
- Provides professional staff support and leadership to the Membership Committee and Ambassadors and identifies new and current members for personal contact by the Ambassadors.
- Participate in the development of marketing plans with staff to ensure maximum publicity for retention purposes.
- Greet and assist Chamber member and visitors.
- Attend and actively participate in appropriate meetings and gatherings.
- Ensure member satisfaction by developing strong, productive relationships with members and staff at all levels.
- Assist in overall success of membership programs and success of the Chamber by demonstrating a commitment to the Chamber mission in all work produced.
- Work with staff to ensure Strategic Plan/Program of Work is accomplished in a timely manner, adhering to established deadlines.
- Anticipate trends and situations and take appropriate action on a timely basis.
- Be willing and able to help all potential and current members as they relate to our organization.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the President & CEO.
The Membership Director must possess strong interpersonal skills to build and sustain positive relationships with key stakeholders. Must have proven customer service and relationship management skills and preferred experience working in an "investor-led" environment. Must be comfortable dealing with a broad spectrum of business industries and people. Must support and encourage confidentiality as it relates to information regarding members and peers. Strong verbal and written communication skills, strong technology skills, Microsoft 365 experience required, Chamber Management software experience preferred but not required. Strong organizational, time management and priority placement skills to reliably meet deadlines. Must be a self-starter, goal oriented, reliable and maintain a professional demeanor. Must be able to work collaboratively in a team environment and support the team, when necessary, with positive disposition. Ability to produce a large quantity of work at high quality. He/she should have a bachelor’s degree or three years of relationship management experience.
To successfully perform the responsibilities of this position, the Membership Director must possess a valid driver’s license, must be available for regular early morning and occasional evening meetings, must be available to work weekends, must be able to devote the occasional additional hours required to ensure the timely completion of all responsibilities related to this position, must be available for occasional overnight travel, must be able to work under regular, moderate levels of stress and must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
