College students from various universities have converged on western North Carolina to aid in the reconstruction of homes devastated by Hurricane Helene. These students, many affiliated with the Chi Alpha ministry, are dedicating their spring break to volunteer efforts alongside nonprofits like Building Compassion.

Cayla Parrott, a sophomore at Winston Salem State University, expressed empathy for those affected by the hurricane: “I can’t imagine what these people went through with having everything they had just lost in the blink of an eye without any control of theirs.”

Frank Frankovsky from Building Compassion highlighted the diverse tasks undertaken by volunteers. “We’ve got other teams that are down closer to the river bottoms, and they’re literally doing all kinds of different work,” he stated. This includes tasks such as constructing retaining walls and rebuilding trailer homes.

Social media posts have highlighted this initiative. Matt Van Swol shared a video showcasing students arriving from as far as New Mexico to assist in these efforts.
