Rebecca Kutler, the new president of MSNBC, recently held an impromptu virtual meeting with the staff of Joy Reid's show following a leak about its cancellation. The discussion was subsequently leaked to the media.
Former CNN reporter Oliver Darcy obtained the recording and reported that staff members expressed frustration over learning about their show's cancellation through media reports rather than from network leadership. They also sought explanations for "The ReidOut" being canceled and questioned their future at MSNBC.
Kutler confirmed during the meeting that "the entire staff had been laid off" but assured them they would receive severance pay through April. She encouraged them to apply for other positions within the company.
Despite assurances from MSNBC about new job opportunities, Darcy noted that employees left the meeting feeling unsettled. The abrupt news of their show's end, combined with uncertainty about future prospects, led to significant frustration among staff members.
Kutler highlighted more than 100 new job postings as a hopeful sign for those affected. However, for those who worked on "The ReidOut," the meeting underscored a challenging reality: their show has ended, and their future at MSNBC remains uncertain.
Although Kutler apologized for how they were informed about their job losses, employees described it as a "terrible, terrible way to learn about our fate." Additionally, Kutler emphasized that "Donald Trump was not a factor" in the decision to cancel the show. When asked if Trump's position influenced the cancellation, she responded, “No, it did not.”
