The effort to merge parts of Oregon into what would be known as 'Greater Idaho' is gaining traction. This movement aims to allow certain counties in Oregon, primarily conservative ones, to join the state of Idaho. The eastern part of Oregon, where this movement is strongest, feels misrepresented under the progressive policies from western Oregon and Portland.

Recent developments include a bill introduced by Republican lawmakers in the Oregon state legislature. This bill proposes creating a task force to study the feasibility and implications of relocating the border between Oregon and Idaho. State Representative Mark Owens, representing Malheur County, introduced HB 3844. The bill requires a report on the impacts of moving the Idaho border to be presented to lawmakers in Salem.

Mike McCarter, president of Greater Idaho, expressed optimism about these legislative efforts: “We are encouraged to see the representatives of Eastern Oregon coming together to advocate for their voters by bringing these bills to the Legislature. The people of Eastern Oregon have made clear they want to explore moving the border and joining Idaho."

The initiative has been gaining momentum since 2020 when measures were put up for votes in various counties. The movement's supporters argue that this is an expression of their democratic rights against perceived authoritarian governance by progressive administrations.

Opponents fear that if successful, this move could set a precedent leading other states or regions to attempt similar secessions.
