In the first week of President Donald Trump's second term, the number of attempted illegal border crossings has significantly decreased. According to reports from Fox News, fewer than 600 individuals crossed illegally into the United States from Mexico on a recent Sunday. This figure is notably low since Trump assumed office.
Fox News sources indicate that none of the nine border sectors recorded more than 200 crossings on January 26, with a total of only 582 daily encounters. The Del Rio sector, which experienced over 4,000 crossings per day during December 2023's border crisis peak, saw just 60 crossings.
For comparison, during the final days of President Biden's administration, daily border encounters ranged between 1,200 and 1,400. Since January 20, numbers have continued to decline sharply. In the initial three days of Trump's administration, there were a total of 2,523 border encounters with daily counts of 1,073, 736, and 714 from January 20 to January 22.
Bill Melugin, who has extensively covered the border crisis, shared his observations on Twitter/X: "NEW: Per sources, Border Patrol recorded just 582 illegal crossings at the southern border yesterday, with not a single one of the nine sectors hitting 200. I’ve never seen anything this low in all of my border coverage."
Melugin further noted that while numbers were already low in Biden's last week—ranging between 1,200-1,400 illegal crossings daily—they have dramatically fallen since Trump took office.
The question remains whether other media outlets will explore these developments or inquire why similar measures were not implemented during Biden's tenure.
