New gun control legislation in Colorado is sparking controversy as Republicans claim it would ban the "majority of guns" in the state. The bill, Senate Bill 3, is set to be reviewed by a committee in the Colorado General Assembly. According to Colorado Senate Republicans, SB-003 is considered "one of the most extreme gun control bills in Colorado’s history."
"If passed, SB-003 will ban the sale of the majority of guns in our state," stated Republican representatives. The proposed law aims to prohibit purchasing, manufacturing, distributing, or transferring semiautomatic rifles or shotguns with detachable magazines.
Introduced by Democrats on the first day of the legislative session, the bill has garnered support from 17 out of 35 state senators. With Democrats holding a majority across all branches of government in Colorado, Republicans face challenges in blocking its passage. If approved, the bill would become effective on September 1, 2025.
Critics have voiced their concerns online. One user commented: "What part of ‘shall not be infringed’ do these people just not get?" Another remarked on changes within Colorado: "Colorado used to be awesome... SAD!"
Some argue that instead of targeting law-abiding citizens, lawmakers should focus on enforcing existing laws: "It's not constitutional... ask yourself why they attack their own law-abiding citizens instead," wrote another critic.
