The Dutch government is facing a crisis following violent incidents between Dutch and Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam. The situation escalated when groups, reportedly consisting of Muslim migrants, targeted individuals perceived as Jewish throughout the city.
In response to the violence, members of the Dutch government condemned the attacks. Geert Wilders, leader of the largest Party for Freedom (PVV), was particularly vocal in his criticism.
A significant development occurred with the resignation of Nora Achahbar, a junior minister from the finance ministry and member of the New Social Contract (NSC) party. Achahbar resigned over alleged racist remarks made by other ministers during a cabinet meeting discussing the violence. She has not yet released an official statement.
Prime Minister Dick Schoof and leaders from four governing parties have blamed migrants, specifically Arabs and Muslims, for attacking supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv after their match against Ajax. The coalition includes Wilders' PVV, VVD, BBB, and NSC parties.
The coalition's response to the clashes has been divided. Wilders criticized cabinet members on social media for their handling of antisemitism issues. Some coalition parties proposed stripping perpetrators of anti-Israeli violence of their citizenship—a measure not fully supported by NSC.
Frans Timmermans, leader of the opposition Labor-Green alliance, commented on Achahbar's resignation: "It is entirely right that Achahbar draws a line and resigns. In this Cabinet, racist statements are the order of the day."
Crisis meetings among party leaders were held at Prime Minister Schoof's residence to address these developments.
