Kell High School issued the following announcement on Jan. 11.

Kell High School is excited to announce that Irene Skow has been named Kell High School’s 2022 PAGE STAR Student. Irene earned the recognition for academic achievement and performance on the SAT.  As part of being named STAR Student, Irene is able to honor a teacher that has influenced her and they are named STAR Teacher. Irene has selected Mr. Watts, Band teacher as her STAR Teacher.

Irene was happy to share with us why she selected Mr. Watts as the STAR Teacher:

I chose Mr. Watts because of the profound influence he has had upon me as both a leader and a person. Mr. Watts helped me to understand that high school is about more than just classes. He helped me to see that it is a time to come to realize that we have an opportunity and obligation to enhance the world around us and the lives of those encounter.

The lessons he taught me will guide me in my future studies and beyond. In college, I plan to study business with a focus on how businesses interact with people and concept of growing one's reach by creating meaningful relationships within their companies and also with their clientele.

The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program is sponsored, administered and promoted by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) and the PAGE Foundation. Since its inception in 1958 the STAR program has honored nearly 28,500 students and the teachers selected as the most influential to their academic achievement. High school seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average to qualify for STAR nomination.

STAR begins each year in participating Georgia high schools when the STAR Student is named and chooses a STAR Teacher to share in this recognition. The students and their teachers are honored by their schools and receive special recognition in their communities from one of the more than 172 statewide civic organizations and businesses that serve as local sponsors of the STAR program. Students then compete for school system recognition as the top STAR Student, and those winners compete for region honors. Region winners contend for the honor of being named State PAGE STAR Student. STAR Teachers continue on with their STAR Students at every level of the program.

We are very proud of Irene and Mr. Watts and the academic excellence they exemplify at Kell High School.
