The U.S. Department of Energy, under the Trump administration, has announced a rollback of several regulations on home appliances initially imposed by the Biden-Harris administration. The changes are part of President Donald Trump's Executive Order titled "Unleashing Prosperity through Deregulation."
In a tweet from the official Department of Energy account, the agency stated: "Here @ENERGY, we are ensuring that American families prosper. We're doing this by removing regulations imposed by the last admin & returning freedom of choice back to the American taxpayer. We want YOU to choose the appliances that work best for you, not the federal government."
U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright further elaborated on these actions in an announcement from the department's website. He said, “Under President Trump’s leadership, the Department of Energy is taking critical steps every day to help American families prosper.” He emphasized that these steps include "removing burdensome regulations put in place by the Biden administration" and highlighted that consumers should have the power to choose their home appliances without federal intervention.
Politico reported on this development with a focus on its impact on efficiency standards established during Joe Biden's presidency. According to Politico, "The Department of Energy is revving up its war on efficient appliances," and it noted that significant efficiency standards were being withdrawn or delayed.
Secretary Wright commented that such regulatory power "should not belong to the federal government," suggesting a shift away from federally mandated efficiency standards toward consumer choice.
