Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed President Donald Trump's interest in acquiring Greenland during an interview with Megyn Kelly. The confirmation follows skepticism from Democrats and the media regarding the seriousness of Trump's intentions.
Rubio emphasized that Trump's proposal is not about expanding U.S. territory but is focused on national security. He explained that Trump approaches the matter with a strategic business mindset rather than a political one.
In his conversation with Kelly, Rubio stated, "Well, I think President Trump, what he has said publicly is he wants to buy it. He wants to pay for it." He acknowledged that while public discussions can complicate diplomatic efforts, "those conversations are going to happen. But this is not a joke."
Rubio further clarified the purpose behind the acquisition, saying, "This is not about acquiring land for the purpose of acquiring land. This is in our national interest, and it needs to be solved." He noted that Trump communicates directly and openly in such negotiations: "Ultimately I think diplomacy in many cases works better when you’re straightforward as opposed to using platitudes and language that translates to nothing."
The topic gained attention following reports of a tense call between Trump and Denmark's Prime Minister, which reportedly left Danish officials unsettled.
