DeKalb County has declared a state of emergency due to severe winter weather conditions, urging residents to stay off the roads and shelter in place. CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson and county officials emphasize the dangers posed by icy roads as temperatures have plummeted below 14°F, rendering road treatments largely ineffective.

County road crews have been working overnight, using over 500 tons of salt, sand, and calcium chloride. However, many roads remain perilous due to ice accumulation. Rockbridge Road and River Road are among those severely impacted.

As of early morning, county emergency services responded to numerous 911 calls including a structure fire and a rescue involving a pregnant woman heading to the hospital. Over 100 vehicles have been reported stranded, obstructing emergency response efforts.

“This is a serious situation,” said DeKalb County CEO Cochran-Johnson. “We are asking for everyone’s patience and cooperation as our teams work around the clock to ensure public safety. Staying off the roads is critical—not only for your safety but to allow emergency responders to reach those in need.”

Residents are advised not to travel unless absolutely necessary and reserve 911 for life-threatening emergencies. The county has equipped 71 emergency vehicles with snow chains and continues assisting stranded vehicles and residents.

For updates, residents can visit the DeKalb County website or follow official channels. Emergency alerts will be issued via CodeRED and WEA systems.

This declaration aligns with Governor Kemp’s statewide emergency order from January 20, allowing DeKalb County to mobilize resources effectively during this crisis. “Public safety remains our top priority,” stated Cochran-Johnson. “We thank our emergency teams and road crews for their dedication during these extraordinary circumstances.”
