City of Chamblee issued the following announcement on Aug. 24.
The Peachtree Road Streetscape had been stalled due to pending litigation with the contractor. Last week, the city and the contractor came to an agreement and all parties agreed to dismiss any and all claims. At this time, the city can move forward with completing the project. Our plan is as follows:
- Energize Lights & EV Charging Stations: We continue to work with GA Power on this issue. The lights are ready to be energized and the charging stations can be completed immediately upon having power. Unfortunately, the issue remains unresolved, and we continue to push.
- Landscaping: By September 1st the city will give our landscape plans to our current landscape contractors, Russell Landscaping and Triscapes, for pricing and timing. We expect the landscaping to be installed in October.
- Brick replacement and ADA/Safety improvements: The city has identified areas where the wrong bricks were installed. These bricks are insufficient for vehicular weight and will be replaced. The city is generating construction documents to address this issue as well as issues related to ADA. We will bid that work by October and plan to have the work completed by the end of the first quarter in 2021.
- General Cleanup: City Public Works staff will use the streetsweeper and crews to remove excess gravel, dirt, etc. They will also pressure wash and remove unsightly concrete drippings. This will occur prior to 9/3.
- Corner of Chamblee Dunwoody Way: This area was left in disrepair. The city is designing a rideshare drop-off/pick-up location for this corner and will put this out to bid upon approval of design.
- Striping: The city’s engineer will work with our existing contractor to complete all striping. This includes parking areas, “ride share” parking areas, striping on the rail trail and other concerns.
- Mid-Block Crossing: We will watch the effectiveness of the mid-block crossing near Chalfont and Mercy Care. It was not built to specs and does not affect cars as much as we had wanted. However, traffic has slowed on the road, so we have decided not to change at this time.
- Bristol Rear Angle Parking: The builder will be installing signs and will paint “Rear Angle Parking” on the spaces. The curb will be repaired. The city will install some domes in the island between the opposite direction lane and the parking to discourage inappropriate use of the spaces. The power poles are in the wrong location and must be moved by the builder prior to completion.
The city has taken steps to avoid future issues such as we have experienced with the Peachtree Road Streetscape. We have hired a consultant to review and restructure the procurement process. On the front end, the city has become LAP certified through the Georgia Department of Transportation, improved its contracts and bond requirements to further protect the city, and trained employees on GDOT standards. We have also increased our use of pre-approved state contracts and pricing. During a project, the city has implemented contractor compliance scorecards and more quality assurance reviews.
