On Tuesday evening, Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral election. The Fox News Decision Desk projected that Mamdani, a Democratic Assemblyman from Queens, would become the next mayor of New York City. He defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
Mamdani, who is 34 years old and was born in Uganda, previously caused an upset by winning the Democratic primary against Cuomo. According to Fox News, “The self-described democratic socialist toppled former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a contentious fight for the future of New York City — and possibly the direction of the Democratic Party.”
Fox News also reported that Mamdani has worked with Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to promote his affordability agenda. This includes proposals such as rent freezes, fast and free buses, city-run grocery stores, and free childcare.
During his victory speech on Tuesday night, Mamdani said he plans to invite New York City’s one million Muslims into “the halls of power.” His supporters gathered at an election watch party in New York City to celebrate his win.
At one point during the event, a message reading “Trump Is Your President” appeared on the jumbotron screen. It is not clear whether this was due to hacking or another cause.
