White students accounted for 1% of Lithonia Middle School enrollment for 2024-25

Lithonia Middle School had 10 white students enrolled for the 2024-25 school year, based on data from the Georgia Department of Education.

The total student body for the 2024-25 year numbered 1,053, with white students representing 1% of that total—making them among the smallest groups at the school.

The school is within DeKalb County School District, which has its administrative headquarters in Decatur.

Of the 129 campuses in the DeKalb County School District, Dunwoody High School reported the largest white student enrollment in the 2024-25 school year with 728 students.

Statewide, over 1.7 million students attended public schools across Georgia, according to the Fiscal Year 2026-1 report from the Georgia Department of Education. Elementary grades accounted for the largest share at 787,206 students (45.9%), followed by middle school enrollment at 388,733 (22.7%), and high school at 539,092 (31.4%).

Chronic absenteeism persists as a significant concern for Georgia schools post-pandemic, as 20.7% of students were absent at least 10% of the time in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education reports. To address this, the department introduced a statewide campaign including a real-time attendance dashboard, a publicity initiative, and targeted assistance for districts with high needs to improve daily attendance rates.

In 2025, Georgia legislators approved changes to attendance laws prohibiting expulsion solely because of absenteeism. New requirements were also added for reporting, and the laws now align with alternative diploma pathways for students.

By 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio was about 14:1, outpacing the national average of 15:1.
