Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser traveled to Martha’s Vineyard this week for what her office described as a “family commitment.” The trip comes as federal forces, under the direction of President Donald Trump, are addressing crime in the nation’s capital.
Bowser was not in Washington on Thursday and is expected to return on Friday. Her office clarified the reason for her absence: “The mayor has a family commitment and had to pick up her daughter,” the mayor’s office said when asked about her trip to Martha’s Vineyard. “She will return to the District tomorrow.”
Bowser’s travel follows President Trump’s decision earlier in the week to federalize Washington, D.C.’s police department after a series of high-profile crimes in the city.
Some public figures have commented on Bowser’s absence from Washington during this period. Social media users and commentators suggested she could remain in Massachusetts or that her presence might not make a difference.
Martha’s Vineyard has previously been noted as a popular destination among Democratic politicians. Former President Barack Obama owns property there, which has been mentioned by observers referencing Bowser’s visit.
