A recent political controversy in Virginia has drawn attention after a white woman was seen holding a racist sign directed at Winsome Earle-Sears, the current Lieutenant Governor and Republican candidate for governor. The incident occurred during an event as Sears campaigns against Democrat Abigail Spanberger.
Following the event, Mark Broklawski, vice chair of the Virginia Democrat Party, addressed the situation on social media. He wrote:
“What happened in Arlington wasn’t just about a meeting. It was about the climate Winsome Sears is creating, one where contempt is currency and neighbors are turned against each other.
@SpanbergerForVA is running on something stronger: a Virginia where we solve problems, not invent enemies.”
Broklawski’s remarks were met with criticism online. Several commentators questioned why blame was being placed on Sears rather than on the individual who held the sign. One user commented:
“This racist sign was the black woman’s fault?”
Another added:
“If Winsome Sears weren’t a black woman that old white lady wouldn’t have made that racist sign. It’s Winsome’s fault.”
A further response stated:
“So let me get this straight: a male Virginia Democrat blames a Black woman for the racism of a white progressive female. Unreal.”
Winsome Earle-Sears responded to Broklawski’s comments by stating:
“Abigail Spanberger’s Democrat Party is blaming me for the racist sign her own volunteer made.
I know Abigail and her elitist cabal are desperate and deluded but this is a whole new level of crazy.”
Abigail Spanberger issued a brief statement through her campaign regarding the incident.
The event highlights ongoing tensions in Virginia’s gubernatorial race and raises questions about responsibility and rhetoric in political discourse.
