The incident began near a checkout counter where Gille targeted shoppers without warning. Eyewitness video from the scene shows bystanders confronting Gille in the parking lot. Among them was an armed citizen who helped contain the suspect before law enforcement arrived within minutes after receiving emergency calls.

Sheriff Shea identified the victims as follows: an 84-year-old woman, an 82-year-old man, an 80-year-old woman, a 70-year-old man, a 67-year-old woman, a 65-year-old woman, a 55-year-old man, a forty-year-old man, a 39-year-old man, a 38-year-old man, and a 29-year-old woman.
