Mark Halperin recently engaged in a discussion with Marc Caputo, formerly of Politico, where they criticized MSNBC for its perceived failure to address issues following the 2024 election results. The conversation focused on the hiring practices at MSNBC and media bias.
Caputo pointed out the hiring of Jen Psaki by MSNBC as an example of what he described as "how utterly broken the Acela media industrial complex is." He noted that Psaki's transition from being a press secretary for a sitting president seeking reelection to hosting a show on a major media outlet was unprecedented. "For the first time in United States history, a sitting president seeking reelection had his press secretary go and work for a major media enterprise and anchor a show. And no one f—ing said anything about how irregular, how newsworthy, how out of line that was," Caputo remarked.
Halperin echoed Caputo's sentiments regarding liberal media bias, stating, "Of all of the examples of liberal media bias denied by the people who run the big organizations, perhaps the most egregious is they hire media writers who are far, far left—as if they’re covering the media fairly." He emphasized that employing individuals who have strong political biases can undermine objective media coverage.
The discussion comes at a time when trust in media outlets is reportedly low. Both commentators suggested that such practices contribute to this declining trust among audiences.
