Two Republican lawmakers have introduced a bill aimed at eliminating federal funding for National Public Radio (NPR). Senator Jim Banks from Indiana and Representative Kat Cammack from Florida are behind the proposed legislation, which they claim will stop taxpayer money from supporting what they describe as "liberal propaganda."

The bill, known as the Defund NPR Act, seeks to amend section 396 of the Communications Act. If passed, it would prohibit any federal funds from being allocated to NPR, including payments for dues or programming purchases.

Senator Banks expressed his views on the matter through Breitbart News, stating, “Taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to fund NPR’s liberal propaganda. If NPR can’t stay afloat without government funding, that tells you all you need to know about the quality of their news.”

Representative Cammack echoed these sentiments by introducing the companion bill in the House. She announced her actions via social media: “This afternoon I proudly introduced the Defund NPR Act in the House. With @SenatorBanks as our Senate lead, we're opposing federal funding for NPR as its liberal propaganda production reaches new heights.”

Both lawmakers argue that if supporters of NPR wish to see it continue operations without federal support, they should seek donations from wealthy allies rather than relying on taxpayer dollars.

Jonathan Turley, a law professor often identified with liberal perspectives, has also voiced opinions suggesting that ending public funding for NPR might be appropriate.
