In a recent cabinet meeting, former President Donald Trump expressed strong opinions regarding the U.S. military's withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. The discussion took place on Wednesday, where Trump was seated next to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
When questioned by a journalist about whether the generals involved in the Afghanistan withdrawal under President Joe Biden were still employed, Trump suggested that Hegseth should consider dismissing them. "I'm not going to tell this man what to do, but I will say that if I had his place I'd fire every single one of them," Trump stated, gesturing towards Hegseth.
Hegseth responded by noting that the Pentagon is conducting a thorough review of the events surrounding the chaotic and deadly withdrawal and plans to ensure "full accountability." The withdrawal from Afghanistan resulted in significant criticism after it culminated in the deaths of 13 American service members.
Trump has consistently criticized how the withdrawal was handled under President Biden's administration. However, it is noteworthy that Trump himself negotiated and signed an agreement with the Taliban in 2020 for an earlier drawdown of U.S. forces.
The episode has been a source of frustration for many Americans who feel that disasters often occur without accountability being enforced.
