Former North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has been confirmed as the Secretary of the Interior. The Senate approved his nomination with a 79-18 vote, receiving support from most Senate Democrats and all Republicans. Burgum's confirmation is seen as pivotal for advancing former President Trump's domestic energy policy.
Burgum, who was once a candidate for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination and later became a prominent Trump campaign surrogate, emerged as one of Trump's less controversial nominees. His nomination advanced out of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee with nearly unanimous support, except for Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), who opposed it.
Wyden, known for crafting renewable energy tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act, cited opposition to President Trump's stance on these cuts as his reason for opposing both Burgum and Energy Secretary nominee Chris Wright.
As Interior Secretary, Burgum will oversee environmental policy and public lands management. Trump has expressed intentions to expand oil and gas development while rolling back environmental protections implemented during the Biden administration.
The confirmation process also saw social media reactions celebrating Burgum's new role. Tweets from various accounts highlighted his appointment as an important step in assembling Trump's team.
