The 2024 election concluded two months ago, but George Clooney remains a focal point of criticism for his role in the Democratic Party's defeat. The actor wrote an op-ed in The New York Times urging President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race, which has since drawn ire from some on the left.

Initially praised by many Democrats for his bold stance, Clooney quickly became a scapegoat after the party's loss. There is ongoing debate about whether retaining Biden as a candidate would have altered the outcome. Some argue that the defeat could have been even more significant with Biden running.

Townhall reported on this situation, highlighting an article from The Hollywood Reporter (THR) that criticized Clooney's involvement in pushing Biden out of the race. THR included Clooney's actions in their year-end reflection on significant moments of 2024.

"When it comes to THR remembering 'all we’ve been through in 2024,' one such example includes 'when George Clooney wrote the dumbest op-ed ever[.]'" reads part of their commentary.

THR further noted: "At the time, it seemed like a sensible enough idea. After all, during his 90-minute senior moment at the June debate against Donald Trump, Joe Biden looked like a surefire loser. So why shouldn’t Clooney, a major Democratic fundraiser, write an op-ed for The New York Times prompting the president to step aside and let a younger candidate run? What could possibly go wrong?"

Despite efforts from other celebrities like Beyoncé, Will Ferrell, Richard Gere, Katy Perry, Dick Van Dyke, and Taylor Swift to sway public opinion towards Kamala Harris, these attempts were unsuccessful. Ultimately, voters favored Hulk Hogan over Harris.

The Democratic Party may struggle to move past this electoral defeat and might not forgive Clooney for his controversial decision anytime soon.
