This weekend, CBS News journalist Jan Crawford predicted that former President Donald Trump might have the opportunity to appoint a fourth justice to the United States Supreme Court either this year or next.
During a discussion on CBS News, Major Garrett asked Crawford for her 2025 prediction. She responded, "I think that Donald Trump will probably get his fourth nomination to the Supreme Court either this year or maybe next year." The conversation suggested Justice Sam Alito might retire soon, as he has been on the bench since 2006.
The potential appointment would solidify a conservative majority in the court. This situation could lead to increased tensions between political parties, reminiscent of reactions during Trump's first term and previous appointments.
Crawford also discussed recent Democratic actions concerning the Supreme Court. She mentioned efforts by Democrats to challenge the court's legitimacy following significant decisions such as the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade. "I think it really started and took off in the wake of the Dobbs decision," she said, adding that there was "a quite calculated effort to undermine legitimacy of the Supreme Court by Democrats."
If another appointment occurs under Trump’s influence, further criticisms from Democrats towards the Supreme Court are anticipated.
