Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers recently rescued a 5-year-old girl who was smuggled into the United States from Mexico. The child was discovered during a traffic stop in Val Verde County, Texas, when DPS officers pulled over a Ram 1500 truck. The rescue followed information obtained from border surveillance cameras that captured an image of a man carrying the child across the Rio Grande near Del Rio, Texas.
The girl's mother, who resides in North Carolina, reportedly paid $8,000 to smugglers to bring her daughter into the country. She located these smugglers through the internet. During the traffic stop, the mother was found with another smuggler.
Chris Olivarez from Texas DPS shared footage on social media showcasing the trooper's actions during the rescue. "MUST WATCH VIDEO: TX TROOPER RESCUES FIVE-YEAR-OLD CHILD SMUGGLED ACROSS THE BORDER," he tweeted.
This incident is not isolated; it highlights ongoing concerns about border security and human trafficking at the US-Mexico border. In another recent case, a 10-year-old boy from El Salvador was abandoned by his smuggler and later found by Texas DPS alone and distressed on the US side of the border.
Olivarez also commented on this issue via social media: "As many of us are celebrating Thanksgiving with our families & friends. Let’s not forget many children will not get to enjoy the holidays or see their families because they have been placed in a dire situation."
Critics argue that current US border policies contribute to such dangerous situations. They cite Article IV, Section 4 of the US Constitution regarding protection against invasion and domestic violence as being neglected under current administration policies.
Former President Donald Trump has stated his intention to address these issues by sealing the border if he takes office again on January 20th, 2025.
