Russia has launched a hypersonic ballistic missile targeting Ukraine, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed the deployment of a new medium-range missile with a hypersonic payload, named Hazel, during a recent strike on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. This action was described by Putin as a "combat test" that successfully hit its target.
The missile launch was framed as retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on military facilities within Russian territory. According to Putin, these strikes were carried out using US-made ATACMS and HIMARS systems and British-made Storm Shadow missiles. The attacks reportedly resulted in at least one Russian casualty and several injuries.
Putin emphasized that Russia reserves the right to respond decisively to any aggression against its territory. He stated, “We will determine the targets during further tests of our newest missile systems based on the threats to the security of the Russian Federation.” He also mentioned that Moscow could target military facilities in countries whose weapons are used against Russia.
In addition to this development, Russian officials have issued warnings regarding a newly opened U.S. ballistic missile base in Poland. Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, indicated that this facility is considered a priority target for potential destruction if necessary.
The situation has not elicited much response from Washington or extensive coverage in U.S. media outlets so far. The silence from American authorities may be part of an effort to keep public awareness low about escalating tensions which could potentially lead to global conflict.
The narrative around these events is reminiscent of past incidents where misleading information led to major conflicts involving Western powers. Historical examples include misinformation preceding U.S involvement in Vietnam and Iraq wars.
As 2024 draws to a close, concerns grow over potential cyber-attacks or other significant events being attributed to Russia or China that might escalate into broader hostilities.
