Mike Pence expressed his concerns regarding potential pardons for those involved in the January 6th protests at the U.S. Capitol, stating he is "literally praying" that Donald Trump refrains from issuing such pardons. These comments were made during an appearance at the 2024 Dispatch Summit.
Pence emphasized, "I don’t think the president should pardon anyone who assaulted a police officer at the United States Capitol on January 6." He also shared that he and his wife Karen are hoping President-elect Trump and Vice President-elect Vance will adhere to their commitments upon taking office.
Trump has consistently promised to pardon participants of the January 6th protests, which he claims have faced undue political persecution. Despite not endorsing Trump in this election cycle, Pence has commented on cabinet appointees, particularly expressing concern over Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s nomination for Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Pence criticized Kennedy's past support for abortion as a significant departure from the pro-life stance held by their administration. He stated, "The Trump-Pence administration was unapologetically pro-life for our four years in office."
Furthermore, Pence called on Senate Republicans to reject Kennedy's nomination, asserting that if confirmed, Kennedy would be "the most pro-abortion Republican appointed secretary of HHS in modern history."
Despite these public statements, Pence did not fare well in his presidential campaign against Trump. His low polling numbers led him to exit the race before the Iowa caucuses. Additionally, his campaign faces financial difficulties, prompting him to seek taxpayer assistance for debt relief.
