The liberal news outlet Axios has been accused of altering its reporting on Vice President Kamala Harris's role as President Joe Biden’s "border czar." This move is part of a broader trend among liberal media outlets to modify their coverage on this topic.
The border and illegal immigration have become significant issues for voters, presenting potential challenges for Harris. NewsBusters highlighted the media's previous framing of Harris as the "border czar," citing CNN senior national correspondent Ed Lavandera in June 2021: “The Vice President is expected to be in El Paso in about an hour and a half… and this will be her first visit to the U.S.-Mexico border region since she was appointed as the border czar by President Biden.”
This terminology was used recently during ABC News Live coverage of the Republican National Convention, where anchor Kanya Whitworth noted that speakers were critical of Harris, especially regarding her role as "border czar."
Politico reported ongoing complaints from Republicans over the weekend: “Despite insisting that she not be made the face of the administration’s border policies, Harris was tasked with stemming migration from Central American countries. That prompted GOP attacks on her as ‘border czar,’ a narrative the White House did little to combat.” They also mentioned: “During the Republican convention last week, many speakers labeled Harris as the ‘border czar,’ since Biden appointed her to take the lead on working with Central America to deter migration at the southern border.”
A video circulating online showcases changes in media portrayal before and after these events.
Social media user Bonchie commented on this situation: “You expect the press to be biased, but holy cow…this is psychopathic pic.twitter.com/w5TqIN33FF.”
Attempts by media outlets to obscure this issue may prove ineffective.
