Congresswoman Nancy Mace (R-SC) has filed a privileged motion to impeach Kim Cheatle, the Director of the United States Secret Service. This action follows a contentious House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing where Mace criticized Cheatle's performance.
During the hearing, Mace accused Cheatle of evading questions and lacking transparency. A transcript of their exchange reveals Mace's insistence on straightforward answers to her questions. "Director Cheatle, the American people are watching and they’re wondering if there are any questions you can answer honestly today," Mace stated. She further questioned whether Cheatle would resign, to which Cheatle responded, "No thank you."
Mace pressed Cheatle on whether recent events represented a "colossal failure" and if they were preventable, both of which Cheatle acknowledged with a "Yes." However, when asked about providing requested information to the committee, Cheatle was unable to confirm compliance.
The Oversight Committee highlighted several concerns: the lack of a comprehensive timeline following an assassination attempt on President Donald Trump, insufficient site visits by Cheatle, security lapses under her leadership, and incomplete responses regarding cooperation with the committee.
Mace announced her motion for impeachment shortly after the hearing. The privileged nature of this motion requires that it be addressed by the House within 48 hours. This procedural step circumvents typical committee reviews and debates.
Nancy Mace tweeted about filing the motion: "Just filed a privileged motion to impeach Kim Cheatle, Director of the Secret Service. This will force a vote within the next 48 hours."
