MSNBC recently conducted a focus group with progressive voters in Wisconsin to discuss Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee and the process that led to her selection. The feedback from participants was lukewarm, reflecting a lack of enthusiasm for Harris as a candidate.
The focus group expressed dissatisfaction with how the Democratic Party handled the nomination process, which they described as taking place "behind closed doors" without input from voters. Participants felt that President Joe Biden's decision not to seek re-election had deprived them of an opportunity for a primary election where they could have had a say in choosing his successor.
Elise Jordan asked the group about their thoughts on Biden's decision not to run for re-election. One participant remarked, "Would have been nice if he made this decision a year ago so we could have had a primary and maybe decided who we wanted to replace him rather than just all flocking to Kamala Harris." Another added, "By trying to clear the field and ensure that it was Biden, not allowing us to have an actual Democrat primary process. We would have benefited significantly if we had figured this out far sooner so there could have actually been more time to have internal debate, have internal democracy within the party."
Another participant criticized the process by saying, "I don't like the process either. There are people behind closed doors and curtains making the decisions for us. It's supposed to be a process. We're supposed to be part of it. That part I don't like on principle."
This feedback highlights a disconnect between media excitement over Harris's candidacy and voter sentiment among some progressives in Wisconsin.
