People are discussing Joe Biden's decision to exit the 2024 presidential election, a rare occurrence not seen since Lyndon B. Johnson chose not to seek reelection. The reasons behind Biden's withdrawal have been widely speculated, with factors such as his health, mental state, polling numbers, and debate performance being considered.
However, Cedric Richmond, Biden's campaign co-chair, attributes the decision primarily to financial issues. Richmond explained that once significant Democratic donors ceased their contributions after the June 27 debate, Biden's campaign faced an insurmountable challenge. "You can’t win without money," Richmond stated on CNN following Biden’s announcement. He noted that this lack of funding created a "self-fulfilling prophecy" leading to blame being placed on Biden despite his accomplishments.
Richmond urged those donors who influenced Biden's exit to now support Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign. It appears that donor support is shifting towards Harris.
This situation highlights the influence of financial backers in political campaigns within the Democratic Party.
Cedric Richmond had previously insisted that Biden would remain in the race until his eventual withdrawal was announced.
