A bipartisan panel is being formed in Congress to investigate the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Democrats are advocating for Rep. Bennie Thompson, who previously chaired the January 6 Committee and sought to remove Trump's Secret Service protection, to be included on this commission.

Punchbowl News has reported that Thompson is a leading candidate among Democrats for an appointment to the 11-member panel established by House leadership. According to Punchbowl, "House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries can choose five Democrats to serve along with six Republicans." They added, "Democrats are still sorting through potential candidates. But one name we’ve heard is Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.). Thompson is the top Democrat on the House Homeland Security panel and chaired the Jan. 6 Committee."

Following the assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally where a bullet narrowly missed Trump, Thompson expressed relief over Trump's safety in a post on X.

In addition to Thompson, Democrats are considering Rep. Dan Goldman for the commission. Goldman's involvement has sparked GOP criticism due to his previous statements about Trump during impeachment proceedings.

Goldman’s spokesperson Madison Andrus told Fox News Digital that Goldman has always been committed to democracy and condemned political violence: “As someone with a lifelong commitment to democracy and the rule of law, Congressman Goldman immediately clarified a misstatement from last November to emphasize his strong condemnation of all political violence.”

Republicans have voiced strong opposition against these potential appointments.
