MSNBC host Lawrence O'Donnell has proposed a unique approach to presidential debates, suggesting that candidates should be accompanied by their staff on stage. This suggestion comes amid discussions about President Joe Biden's performance in debates.
O'Donnell, addressing the proposal, said, "Allow the candidates to have as many staff as they want, join them on the stage throughout the debate, and make sure that all of them have microphones." He elaborated that candidates should be able to confer with their staff at any time during the debate and that this interaction should be audible to the audience. "We could watch the candidates actually think and process information," he stated.
The concept is not limited to Biden; O'Donnell implies it could apply to all candidates, including former President Donald Trump. However, some view this suggestion as primarily beneficial for Biden.
O'Donnell further explained that allowing staff involvement mirrors how governance works in reality. "The presidency does not involve oral exams and memory quizzes," he argued. According to him, it's common for leaders like Secretaries of State to speak on behalf of presidents globally.
This idea has sparked conversation ahead of the scheduled September debates between Biden and Trump. The question remains whether such a format will be considered or if it will impact Biden's participation moving forward.
