Westerfield became a full-time Police Officer with the City of Stone Mountain Police Department in April 2006. While in the most pivotal point of his career, he was internally promoted to Sergeant in the Patrol Division in April 2015. He served in that role until being promoted to Lieutenant over patrol overseeing police operations in January of 2021.
On May 3, 2022, Westerfield took over as the Interim Chief of Police for the City of Stone Mountain police department after a unanimous decision from the city council. After serving in the interim role for over seven (7) months, on December 13, 2022, The Stone Mountain City Council appointed Westerfield as Chief of police.
