“We invite you to come to enjoy the best Tofu Soup in Atlanta.” - Don Kim.
The city of Doraville has many excellent Korean restaurants, but one that for 20 years has kept its quality and customer loyalty is SoKongDong Tofu & BBQ. This month we talked with its owner, Don Kim, and manager, Monica Kim.
When they opened the restaurant in 2002, many Koreans were in Doraville, that is why they establish their restaurant here. Now, there are people for all over, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Latin, which is very good for business. You can see people from all over, from different cultures, which I like very much. Doraville is a very diverse city, said Ms. Kim.
We always offer delicious food, so we have customers that always come back. The environment is welcoming, and our staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. My coworkers have been here for 16, 12, and 8 years, so they know our customers and take excellent care of old and new customers alike.
Our specialty is Tofu, made from condensed soy milk. Tofu is a very healthy food. It is excellent for cholesterol, high in protein, and low in calories. Our clients can choose between 11 to 12 options for their Tofu Soup (Seafood (clam, shrimp & oyster), Beef, Mushroom, Kimchi, Veggie Dumpling, are some of them) and the level of spiciness from mild to very spice.
Other popular delicious dishes include Bulgogi Stone Bibimbap (it comes in a stone dish that keep the food hot), Pancake, and Korean BBQ Short Ribs. All meals come with various side dishes (“Banchan” in Korean). These dishes are to eat with the main dish. However, sometimes customers confuse these side dishes with appetizers and eat them as soon as they arrive at the table instead of waiting to eat them with the main dish. Our side dishes include Kimchi (salty and spicy fermented cabbage), Korean Green Salad, Potatoes (Gamja Jorim), Fried Fish, Glass Noodles (Jap Chae), Broccoli, Soybean Sprouts, Spicy Korean Radish (Musaengchae), and Stir-fried Fish Cakes (Eomuk Bekkeum).
The décor is very traditional, with a Korean rooftop, Hanji paper doors, wooden tables, typical Korean instruments (Junggu (Korean double-headed, hourglass-shaped drum), Buk Korean Barrel Drum, and Youngchang Sogo (hand drum)), and typical ornaments.
