In July 25, 2022, Mayor Lynn Deutsch presented Leigh Ann, Kaleigh and Colton McGrady with the Carnegie Medal for Kim McGrady. The Carnegie Medal is North America’s highest honor for civilian heroism. It recognizes civilians who risk their lives to save others. On April 8, 2021, Kim McGrady died while attempting to save swimmers from drowning off Miramar Beach in Florida. When McGrady saw swimmers in distress in the turbulent surf, he ran into the water, along with his son Colton (17 at the time) and his son’s friend Preston Lyn, to help. At some point, they lost sight of McGrady, who drowned saving an indeterminate number of swimmers.
