South Dakota Republican gubernatorial candidate Toby Doeden was assaulted and threatened on Saturday evening while attending a Northern State University football game. According to political consultant Matt Hurley, Doeden was approached by an individual who physically assaulted him and made threats against his life, referencing Doeden’s support for the late Charlie Kirk.

The suspect was immediately detained and arrested by law enforcement present at the event. “We are grateful for the swift response of both the Northern State University Campus Police and the Aberdeen Police Department,” Hurley stated.

Doeden had recently expressed public support for Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), after Kirk was killed earlier in the week. In a social media post, Doeden wrote: “The cries of this widow will echo around the world like a battle cry.” He added, “This is not the end of @TPUSA. This is the very beginning. God bless, @MrsErikaKirk!”

No further details about charges or court proceedings have been released at this time.
