The Perimeter Community Improvement Districts (PCIDs), in collaboration with the City of Dunwoody, Dunwoody Development Authority, MARTA Artbound, and Living Walls, is seeking qualifications from artists or artist teams for the commission of an outdoor public mural.
The mural will be installed at the Dunwoody MARTA Station on the south side of the station’s parking garage (facing Hammond Drive). This particular site is surrounded by spectacular transformation spurred by new development, improved streetscapes and pedestrian access. It sits opposite State Farm and Carvana’s offices at Park Center, and across from the construction site of High Street, a major mixed-use destination. A short walk from the mural is Twelve24, home to Insight Global.
Since its opening in 1996, MARTA’s Dunwoody Station has grown into one of the most active transit hubs outside of I-285, welcoming thousands of riders each weekday. In addition to a bus depot serving three Xpress buses and three MARTA bus routes, the station is home to seven different shuttle routes that connect transit riders directly to and from their destinations. Now a central node for the Perimeter business district, Dunwoody Station’s parking deck has been an enticing “blank canvas” for future vibrancy.
The Request for Qualifications (RFQ) opens on December 1, 2022 and will close on January 20, 2023. After interested artists have submitted their qualifications, the selection committee will request proposals from three finalists, who will receive an honorarium to prepare their visions for the space. The artist whose proposal is chosen will install the mural in 2023. The selection process and the logistics for the painting of the mural will be assisted by three organizations with a legacy in the community of high-quality, local art: Living Walls, MARTA Artbound, and the Dunwoody Art Commission.
“I’m so excited to see more art at the Dunwoody MARTA Station,” said Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch. “The City of Dunwoody is putting an emphasis on using art to bring public spaces alive for our residents, employees, and visitors. By adding this new focal point to an otherwise ordinary corner, we’ll further our goal of making Perimeter Center a more walkable community.”
Public art has become a growing priority for Dunwoody and local stakeholders, a reflection of the personality and evolution of the community and its residents. Ann Hanlon, Executive Director of Perimeter CIDs, says, “We’re excited to work with our partners at the City of Dunwoody, MARTA and Living Walls to create our second mural installation at the Dunwoody MARTA station. We believe that an engaging piece of public art will bring an enlivened sense of place to the Hammond Drive corridor for employees, residents, and visitors to the Central Perimeter.”
Artbound, MARTA’s in-house public art program, is supporting the mural as part of its ongoing initiative to use its stations as platforms for transformative art installations. “We’re happy to support this effort to brighten the streetscape in Dunwoody, and hope it inspires a safer and more walkable experience for the community.”
