A new report from the center-left group Welcome warns that the Democratic Party is losing support among most voter groups, with growth limited to self-identified white liberals. The findings, shared first with Semafor, are based on consultations with hundreds of thousands of voters over six months.
According to the report, 70% of surveyed voters view the Democratic Party as “out of touch.” Many respondents believe Democrats focus too much on issues such as protecting LGBTQ+ rights and fighting climate change, while not giving enough attention to concerns like border security and crime reduction. The group Welcome began as a political action committee in 2022 before establishing a nonprofit for political research.
The report recommends that party members move away from progressive language on race, abortion, and LGBTQ issues adopted after the 2012 election. It also suggests nominating more candidates who are willing to vote with Republicans on conservative immigration and crime legislation.
Former Illinois Representative Cheri Bustos endorsed the report, stating: “The Democratic Party had better listen — for the good of our nation.”
Copies of the report will be distributed to elected Democrats following its publication, with events planned in Washington D.C. and New York to promote its findings.
