In Venezuela, the government led by Nicolas Maduro has reportedly arrested 54 people over the past month in a crackdown on political opposition. According to a report from Maracaibo, 44 of those detained remain in custody, with 22 identified as members of Vente Venezuela, the party associated with Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado. Students from the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) were also among those detained.
Orlando Moreno, national coordinator of the Human Rights Committee for Vente Venezuela, stated that “54 people were arrested in the country in October, of which only ten have been released.” He further explained that “22 of the detained are activists from María Corina Machado’s party, eight from other political parties, and fourteen are members of civil society.”
Moreno called for their immediate release and highlighted the impact on families: “‘On average, one arrest occurred every 15 hours, an alarming figure that has resulted in dozens of families being physically and emotionally harmed, simply for thinking differently’, stated the Committee’s national coordinator.”
He also noted that these numbers only reflect confirmed cases and do not include possible unreported kidnappings or forced disappearances due to fear or lack of information.
Recent satellite imagery shows U.S. naval vessels near Venezuelan waters as regional tensions rise. A poll indicates most Latin Americans support military intervention against Maduro’s government.
