Police in Port St. Lucie, Florida, have arrested a 15-year-old girl after she attacked a police vehicle with a shovel. The incident was captured on video and shared by the Port St. Lucie Police Department on social media, drawing widespread attention.
According to police, officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Bartell Avenue following reports of a disturbance at a residence involving the teen, identified as Amy Chance. When officers arrived, they found Chance in the driveway holding a shovel.
Chance approached the police car and struck it several times with the shovel. One officer can be heard in the video saying, “Are you kidding me?” as he exited the vehicle to confront her.
The Port St. Lucie Police Department stated: “Amy Chance was arrested last week after officers were dispatched to the 1400 Blk of Bartell Ave. after a disturbance was reported inside the home, caused by Chance.” They added that “Officers, understandably frustrated that Chance caused over $1,200 in damages to the hood of the car, took her into custody where she is now charged with a felony for criminal mischief.”
Police reported that as officers approached with a taser drawn and ordered her to stop, Chance dropped the shovel and appeared to make an obscene gesture toward them before attempting to walk away. Officers then detained her without further resistance.
The department noted: “Regardless of age, resorting to intentional damage of people or property in our city will result in an arrest,” adding that “With the exceptional training of our officers, Chance was taken into custody without incident.”
This event follows another recent case involving a shovel attack on law enforcement; both the New York Post and Daily Mail reported on an incident in Anaheim, California in September where an individual attacked police with a shovel near an elementary school before being fatally shot after warnings from officers.
