Poland temporarily closed Warsaw Chopin Airport and increased military readiness following reports of Russian drones entering Polish airspace. The incident occurred as Russia continued large-scale airstrikes against Ukraine, with hundreds of drones and missiles targeting infrastructure across the country, including areas far from the front lines.
According to a statement by Poland’s Operational Command cited by CNN, “ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems have reached the highest level of alert” after Russia launched significant attacks on Ukrainian territory. The statement added, “To ensure the security of Polish airspace, the Operational Commander of the Polish Armed Forces has activated all necessary procedures,” noting that the military is “fully prepared for immediate response.”
The US Federal Aviation Administration published a Notice to Airmen indicating that Warsaw Chopin Airport was unavailable due to “unplanned military activity related to ensuring state security.” Reports also indicated that both Polish and allied fighter jets were scrambled in response to possible incursions by Russian suicide drones into NATO-controlled airspace over Poland (https://t.co/xMHp0240ZW).
Ukrainian sources posted on Telegram about drones heading westward toward Zamosc in Poland, though this message was later deleted. It remains unclear how many—if any—drones actually crossed into Polish territory.
The situation comes amid ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with failed peace negotiations prolonging hostilities in the region.
